Slideshow on your Mac

Sat, 9 June 2007

There is a quick and easy way to create a slideshow on your Mac without need to go to iPhoto, but rather straight from Finder. Simply navigate to the folder containing pictures, including external hard drive, USB drive or a CD/DVD, and select pictures you’d like to view in your slideshow. Then right-click (Ctrl-click) and select Slideshow from the contextual menu.

OSX slideshow

That’s all. The slideshow opens in full screen mode, with photos swapping every 3-4 seconds.

You can select the photos in a few different ways:

  • To select all photos in the folder press Cmnd-A on your keyboard,
  • to select a group of photos click on the first photo, then hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click the last photo, this will automatically select all photos in between, including the two you clicked, or
  • to select specific photos, hold down Cmnd key and click only the photos you want to view.

You can even create a slideshow from the pictures you have on your desktop, simply select them, right click, select slideshow and off it goes.

Stumble it!

  1. Tons of people probably don’t know about this. I frequently forget it’s there. But I love the grid layout. It’s so useful for quickly looking through a batch of photos for the filename of the one you need.

It’s the kind of stuff that makes a Mac a Mac.

  2. I for one didn’t know about this… thanks!

  3. Woohoo!! I’ve been using Macs for years now, but somehow never realised you could do this!! Thanks a lot, i’m pretty sure i’ll be using it a lot from now!

  4. On right click i don’t find anything like slideshow in contextual menu. Do i need to install some plugins for this ??? I have macbook with mac os x 10.5.3

  5. @shabeeb:
You don’t need to install any plugins for this shabeeb. Just use Leopard’s QuickLook feature. Navigate to the folder where your photos are (using Finder), select the ones you want to see in a slideshow (Cmd-A to select all or pick using Cmd and click specific or a group of photos) then press Spacebar on your keyboard. Click the opposite diagonal arrows to view Fullscreen and click Play button for Slideshow.
