SafariBlock - ad block for Safari
Sun, 15 July 2007
One thing that kept me away from using Safari as my main browser was the lack of proper ad filtering extension. AdBlock for Firefox is a work of magician and once you start using it - you can’t live without it.
But FSB software have just released the version 1.2 of SafariBlock, an extension that comes close to what AdBlock does in Firefox. You can right-click on elements on the page and block them by selecting “SafariBlock Image”

One thing I didn’t like is that you need to reload the page in order to get the element blocked, but once you get rid of most ‘usual suspects’ the rest is easy.
SafariBlock is free, works with Safari 2 and Safari 3 beta, and can be downloaded from FSB software website.

Buggy. Spinning Beach ball in Safari 3 and the Finder. Could move pages around screen but could not close, quit or force quit or open anything. Happened 3 times while opening multiple web pages. I have only 2 adds blocked. Hard reboot required. Turned off blocking in Safari Prefs no problems since.
Safari 3 Beta and 10.4.10 on 1.67 GHz PPC G4 w/ 2 gigs ram.

I’d go along with Gabor here. Inputmanager-based plugins are always bad news for stability. A decent ad-blocking .css file, however, can do the same job without any of the downsides. The GoodVibrations .css is easily the best I’ve seen - and it’s optimised for webkit, so works well with Omniweb (my preferred browser) too.
Good blog btw - just surfed on in and enjoyed what I found =]
