John C Dvorak about Mac users who like Vista

Fri, 26 January 2007

MacDailyNews writes an interesting article about John C Dvorak’s opinion on Macs and Windows Vista. A couple points make me actually wonder if John is just teasing Mac users to generate traffic for his blog (hmmmm, can’t remember that link somehow now) or is he really smoking some bad crack.

Dvorak foments, “From what I can tell, the Mac community likes Vista more than the PC community.

Mac community? John, two Mac users, no matter how influential and popular they are, are not Mac community. In the TWIT episode 82 of the 1st Jan 2007, while everyone was thinking of barbecue and warm English beer, Andy Ihnatko mentioned that he actually liked Vista because…

…the search finally works and voice recognition works great

to what Will Harris of bit-tech.net agreed. For the next hour John kept bragging about Mac users who like Vista, and I see he didn’t stop four weeks later.

Dvorak further claims

“When it comes to the Apple-versus-PC battle, one oft-neglected discussion is that the majority of people do not like Macs. Get over it, it’s true. Hence, Apple’s market share is low. There is no other explanation, although price has always been the rationale…”

While I am not a huge fan of Bill Gates, I have to give him credit for his courage and ability to sell substandard product at the premium price. If we rewind back a decade or two and think Microsoft, IBM, DOS, Microsoft licensing deals, one can hardly say that Bill Gates is a bad businessman. Business practices aside, Bill has managed to sell DOS and Windows to everyone including your unborn children and managed to ensure their children buy Windows as well, once they come around.

Could someone remind John C Dvorak that there might be another explanation why Mac market share is tiny, and that IBM has something to do with it, whether they wanted it or not.

The other reason is exactly the one he is mentioning above, Macs were expensive. They were very expensive for people who wanted just a home computer, in fact, the price was prohibitive for many.

Another Dvorak’s claim makes me wonder if John is aware of what he is talking about:

I always felt that if something weird happened on a Mac I would never be able to recover a file. I’ve never felt that way with a PC. I figured that with a PC, I could take the hard disk out and easily put it into another machine and then go exploring the drive without worry.

Isn’t it the same with Mac ? What about taking the drive out of Mac and putting it into another Mac ? Yes, I see, it’s dificult to open a Mac while big beige box was almost always half open. Does that mean that we should stop buying and using PC laptops, because we can’t take hard drive out.

Have another one, John. Cheers!

  1. I think this Dvorak character is extremely childish. I think you’re equally childish for responding to him.

  2. :) just dropping by from mybloglog to say hi! :) GOODAY!

  3. Even though I think Dvorak is off his rocker, I’d like to draw your attention to your comment “While I am not a huge fan of Bill Gates, I have to give him credit for his courage and ability to sell substandard product at the premium price,” which I think is as cracked as Dvorak’s. Is Windows perfect? No. Is Mac? No. Even Apple’s and Job’s ethics aren’t very far from Microsoft’s. Now about that price…I can get a Windows PC that’s comparable to my brand new Intel Core 2 Duo iMac for a third of the price. Better yet, I’ll be able to upgrade that PC if I wanted newer technology, like a PhysX card, or whatever.
You might want to look at this link before mentioning premium pricing.
