iPhone disappointment

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you are aware that Apple has announced and demonstrated the long awaited mobile phone - iPhone. Yes - The iPhone.

Iphone
I was stunned when Jobs announced the name of the device was iPhone, knowing that Cisco is the owner of the trademark since 2000 when they bought the company who registered trademark in 1996. But Apple was quick to advice the world audience that Apple and Cisco are working on a deal that will let Apple use the name iPhone for its device.

About a day later, Cisco filed a lawsuit to prevent Apple from infringing upon its registered iPhone trademark, Apple responds that they “think Cisco’s trademark suit is silly…We believe (their) trademark registration is tenuous at best…”

While I find iPhone, the Apple’s one, to be a very fine product, I think it will be out of reach of many due to its high price and the compulsory two years contract with the mobile carrier company. In the US this is Cingular, in Australia very likely to be Telstra. Data transfer via GSM network is very expensive in Australia and I think owning an iPhone down here will be a very costly luxury.

One thing I was hoping Apple will release was an ordinary mobile telephone like SE K610i with an iPod Nano somehow pushed into it. Even better, LG’s chocolate slide phone, with 4GB flash memory and the iPod Nano under its skin for around $399 (US $299) would be a real deal maker.

Asia 08

This way we’re set for a long wait. Somehow I hope Australia was not meant when they said “…and Asia in 2008″

Stumble it!

  1. You can look at it this way: with the iPhone and all the commotion surrounding it people will get more interested in mobile internetting, so hopefully that will get cheaper.
I’m from Belgium and i would not yet buy a phone to send mails or browse the internet, but if it wasn’t really expensive it would be an option. It’s a good thing that it uses Wifi networks too. If it used VOIP like Skype to call using Wifi it would really get interesting.

  2. Why would you think the price will make it out of reach even if you over estimate on the american price stated in Aussie dollars it’ll be around $1,200-$1,100 mark which is on par with every other new “smart” phone when it’s released, generally when people want a phone they are more than willing to sign up on a contract. I wouldn;t worry about Telstra either I’d be more worried that they stick with Cingular which is AT & T down here.
Anyways it’s Apple… not like anything they make is particularly low priced, I mean for the price i paid for my MacBook Pro i could of got 3 bloody PC laptops.
