Fonts incorrectly rendered on silver iMac

Thu, 23 August 2007

There is a possibility that some fonts are rendered incorrectly on your silver iMac running OS X 10.4.10. The font appears left-justified or not smooth in some applications.

To correct this, Apple recommends the following fix:

  1. Log in with an administrator account (or a user account that allows you to install software, make changes, and so on).
  2. Open the Terminal application from Applications/Utilities.
  3. Cut-and-paste (or carefully type) the following text at the prompt:
    sudo rm -r /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS
  4. Press the ‘Enter’ key.
  5. When prompted for your password, enter the password you use to login (or install software) and press the ‘Enter’ key again.
  6. Close the Terminal application and restart the computer. The fonts should now look properly rendered.

This affects only silver iMacs (mid 2007 model).

  1. This was a problem on my new iMac. I only noticed it in iPhoto08 though… When I created a new Event, I could not rename the event by clicking on the event name. It would appear as I could type in the text box that appeared, but nothing would happen when I did so. Also the Event labels overlapped the thumbnail images for the Event. I searched and quickly found this solution. Odd that it was a font rendering issue, I thought.

  2. This can also be accomplished by moving that folder to the trash, restarting and emptying the trash.
