Skype universal binary released
Fri, 12 May 2006
Skype for Intel Macs has finally been released yesterday. The 16.4 MB universal binary is availabe as free download from Skype web site.
I have run a small comarison between old, PPC version and new Universal version and the difference is very obvious with most noticeable the application start up time. With no need for Rosetta, universal version starts in just under two seconds. This is actually the time when the splash screen is displayed. After this the log-in screen is displayed and you are logged-in some 6-7 seconds later, depends on your internet connection. In my case it’s the 8Mbps cable (256 kbps up).
| Skype 1.4.0.49 |
Power PC |
Universal |
| Start up time (sec / bounces) | 14.8 s / 20 b | 1.8 s / 2 b |
| Logged in (total time) | 22.3 s | 7.6 s |
| Memory | 53.8 MB | 29.1 MB |
| Application size (on disk) | 19.3 MB | 27.7 MB |
Another difference worth mentioning is the memory footprint, 53.8 MB for PPC and only 29.1 MB for universal, while the application size on the disk is somewhat smaller for the PPC version, which is to be expected anyway.
The testing computer is 1.83 Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro with 1 GB memory.
