RapidWeaver 3.5 public beta released

Sat, 3 June 2006

RealMac Software just realeased public beta of RapidWeaver, an excellent web site buillding application. I haven’t used RW in a few months since switching to Intel architecture and with RapidWeaver 3.5 being universal binary I felt it’s time to light up the application and give it another chance.

Having spent about half an hour looking around and exploring application I have to admit I have very mixed felings. I know this is beta software but some things I definitely didn’t like.

The first one is lack of funcion that was mentioned by RealMac Software a little while ago - WYSIWYG table editor. The table editor was one of the things I was waiting for in order to redesign VKCC website that was created with Front Page 2003. But table editor is nowhere to be seen and I felt somewhat let down.

Another thing I don’t like is that there is no theme editor anymore. OK, it wasn’t editor but some themes had multiple designs and you could configure it in different ways. Not any longer, it’s gone.

One of the new functions in version 3.5 is the Code view.  However, great disappointment is that this thing is only the viewer and not the editor, so I’m yet to learn what benefit I have in watching the code I can’t edit.
About the only good thing about version 3.5 is the new interface and I like the look of Tiger much better than brushed metal we had with previous version.

I think I’ll have to wait for another few weeks before thinking of my other website redesign.

  1. Switch to Sandvox, it’s by far the better solution, even though it’s only 1.0.1 version. I was also surprised that RW people haven’t done a better job.
Couple of years ago, they had all the market for themselves, this time around, people can choose between iWeb, Sandvox and RW. I’m in the process of switching all my websites to Sandvox.

  2. I too have just started playing with RW 3.5 and am dissappointed with the lack of a table inspector, I really do hope that they put that into the final version. As for the other inspectors they are now in the window menu, you can get to Media Inspector by pressing ⌘2 and the Theme Inspector by pressing ⌘3.

I do prefer the look and seems to run faster on my G4 mac mini than RW3.2.1, but it doesn’t seem to that much of an update really, I can see why it’s a free upgrade.

I do like RW and will stick with it for the time being, I just hope they push forward with some more major updates soon!
