In January 2005 I decided to bite the bullet and go for a Mac, so I bought the beautiful 20″ G5 iMac and I was very happy with it. Apart from a few problems I experienced with the third party wireless adapter drivers, I haven’t had any issues with it.
But the time has come and the change was on the horizon. I wanted a computer that is more portable, the one I can carry around the house (and around the town), the one I can use while sitting in the backyard or on the sofa pretending to watch TV. The choice was obvious – MacBook Pro. I had my thoughts around MacBook, or whatever they will call the new iBook, but with the resolution almost certainly being 1280×800 I decided to go for the Pro as 1440 felt more to my liking than any other resolution.
So I went to the Mac1 shop in Fortitude Valley and picked up one – 15 inch, 1.83 GHz stock model (serial number W8614… ) and also upgraded the memory to 1GB, thanks to my friend Jasenko (kengur).
I was a little frightened about all the problems people were experiencing with MBPs but so far I have almost none of them. I had a bit of an issue with heat, didn’t like the hot touch at all but after upgrading the firware to 1.0.1 the machine has considerably cooled down.
No whine from the processor and no problem with distorted and frozen screen. I read many people having a problem with the superdrive and I had my first stuck DVD earlier this evening, the thing just wouldn’t go out. If I try to eject it I could hear the sounds of things moving inside but the disk would never come out. I even tried rebooting the machine with the trackpad button down but the same happened. Some people had success with turning their MBP upside-down while boting and someone again suggested tilting the machine 45 degrees down, so the DVD comes in a near free fall out. Nothing helped, but remarkably tilting the computer 45 degrees up (DVD slot end up) has fixed the problem. It might be because we’re in Australia so the things are already upside-down here.
These few things aside I’m very happy with it, works hard, doesn’t complain too much and does exactly what I want it to.
