iTunes 7 - Equalizer keyboard shortcut
Sun, 8 October 2006
When iTunes 7 came out a few weeks ago, I was surprised to see the equalizer button removed from the bottom right corner.

Fortunately, there is another way to activate equalizer, through the menu bar, View | Show Equilizer.

Or simply using the keyboard shortcut, errrr… Hang on, that’s gone too! Houston Cupertino, we have a problem!
But there is something we can do to fix this. In OS X you can create custom keyboard shortcuts, and this is exactly what we will use.So, open your System Preferences and click on Keyboard and Mouse. Then select Keyboard Shortcuts.

Click on the plus sign to add a custom shortcut. In a new window that opens, or rather drops, select iTunes application, in the Menu Title box type Show Equalizer (case sensitive) and then click in Keyboard Shortcut box and key in your preferred shortcut (I used Cmnd-Shift-E).

Then click Add and close the System Preferences.
In order to make this work, you will need to log out and log in again. Now, when you open iTunes, in the menu bar click View and you will see that Show Equializer has a shortcut assigned to it.

From now on, any time you need equalizer, you simply key Cmnd-Shift-E (or whatever shortcut you opted for) and there it is, right on your screen.

This is an interesting improvement/degradation of the software. I wonder why?

Interesting possibility that I didn’t know about. But what I would really like to know is this: Why on earth is the equalizer no longer able to change preset according to what setting has been applied to songs? For instance, in a playlist I may have applied many different equalizer presets for different songs, and the equalizer used to change its settings according to this. Not so in iTunes 7: you pick a setting and the equalizer just stupidly keeps sitting there, no matter what setting is applied to the song that’s playing. Why? Is there any way to get around this?

I’m surprised they kept the equalizer, to be honest. It’s terrible by Apple’s standards.
