Run dashboard widgets on your desktop
Tue, 5 September 2006
I was going through some tips and tricks I had in my MacJournal and came across an interesting one I haven’t used in a while. When Tiger was released we all were amazed with the Dashboard and its Widgets. I wondered if it was possible to run some of them on my desktop, insted opening the Dashboard every time I wanted to check something.
There is a simple way to do this, you only need to run the Dashboard in developers mode.

To do so, open the Terminal ( ~/Aplications/Utilities/Terminal ) and type the following:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
and press return. This will enable the developer mode, but to activate it you need to log out and in again.
To move the Widget to your desktop, open the Dashboard (F12) and click and start dragging the Widget you want. While dragging it, close Dashboard (F12) and then drop the Widget anywhere you like. Easy as that.

For folks who don’t have a big or 2nd monitor, another option is to use Amnesty, which allows you to set the window level the widgets use while on your desktop.

What theme is being used in this screenshot?

Ya, that Amnesty thing is way better, cause you can have the window only over the desktop, not other windows. I just came here to ask about that, then saw your post Tro Tro haha. And to Kyle…. that “theme” i think you are refering to, is not a theme. It is the Flock web browser… based off of Firefox. http://www.flock.com

Indeed, it’s Flock, no theme there.

Hey, i tried it out and it works. But for mine, the widget was always on top of all other applications. So how do i undo it?

I’m running Tiger 10.4.7.
I’ve put it into developer mode, and the widgets work great. But how do I get them to GO AWAY now? I’ve turned developer mode OFF defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode NO but that didn’t seem to work… I’ve tried to kill the processes of those particular widgets, but the kill command only resets the process.
Thoughts?

reverse the same process that got it there. click, drag, F12, place it back in the dashboard.

I ran across another way to accomplish this without using the developer mode :)

there is another way you can do this just open up dashboard and open up the menu tab using the plus button then drag the widget you want on your desktop but dont let it go then exit dashboard and youll still have it then let go and its on your desktop
